BECi is one of the nine of Louisiana's eleven electric cooperatives that participates in the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. (link is external) To enter the essay contest, students must write an essay (maximum word count 1,000) on a selected topic. Rules are listed below. For a printable version, click here.

The top four winners will attend the Youth Tour in Washington D.C.. Nationwide, electric co-ops from 45 states participate in this event and more than 1,500 young people from across the nation gather in Washington D.C. every year.

ESSAY CONTEST - Students must write an essay (maximum word count 1,000) on “What is the biggest issue facing your generation and how can we address that issue?” The topic of concern should be stated and thoroughly discussed. Good luck to all and have fun writing!

JUDGING - Entries will be judged on originality, composition, neatness and grammar.  Four all-expense paid trips will be awarded.  Winners will travel to our Nation’s Capital to join 1,500 other young people sponsored by the Rural Electrification Program.



  1. High School sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to enter.
  2. Students must write an essay (maximum word count 1,000) on “What is the biggest issue facing your generation and how can we address that issue?” Please do not sign or place your name in the essay. Your name should only be listed on the cover sheet. Please have the essay available by email. Obscene or offensive material will not be accepted and will automatically be disqualified.
  3. Entries must be written in ink or typed.
  4. A cover sheet must be attached containing the following information:

  6. Parent’s or Guardian’s Name
  7. School’s Name, Address, and Phone Number
  8. Sponsoring Teacher’s Name.

The due date is Friday, February 2, 2018.  Entries received after the due date will not be judged.Papers entered will become the property of BECi and not returned.
